How We Build These Guides: Methodology

Every school list on this site is built the same way, from the same sources. This page explains how, so you can check our work.

Where the data comes from

Two U.S. Department of Education datasets: the College Scorecard (tuition, average net price, enrollment, ownership) and IPEDS completions (which programs each school actually graduates students from). We include institutions reporting programs in the federal CIP 12.05 family: culinary arts and chef training (12.0503), baking & pastry arts (12.0501), restaurant and culinary management (12.0504), and related codes. Data was last retrieved in July 2026. Each table’s caption carries its retrieval date.

What the numbers mean

Tuition is the school’s published annual price. The sticker. Net price is what students actually paid on average after grants and scholarships, among federal aid recipients. We lead with net price because at some schools the two differ by $10,000 or more, and the sticker is the less useful number. Enrollment is total institutional enrollment, not culinary-program headcount. When a school reports no figure we print a dash instead of guessing, and we null out obvious data artifacts (a negative net price, for instance) rather than publish impossible numbers.

Editorial rules

We do not rank schools. Rankings imply a precision that cost and outcome data cannot support, so we group and sort instead. Every school we single out as a standout gets checked against its own website first. When a well-known school is missing from a table, either it closed or it reports under different federal codes (hospitality management is the usual one), and the page says which. Closures get verified against school announcements and news reporting before we state them.

How this site makes money

Advertising. Some pages carry affiliate widgets and sponsored listings from education-marketing partners, and we may earn a commission when you request information through them. What sponsorship buys is placement. It does not change the federal data in our tables, it does not buy a standout profile, and it does not remove a closure notice. The numbers next to a sponsored listing are still the government’s.

Corrections and updates

Tables are rebuilt when the Department of Education publishes new Scorecard and IPEDS files, and page dates reflect the underlying data year. Spot an error, a closure we missed, or a new program? Tell us and we will verify it against the primary sources and fix the page. Guides are reviewed by Ankit P., the site’s editor.
