Best Culinary Schools in California (2026)

California reports more culinary schools than any other state: 63 institutions in the federal CIP 12.05 family, and 59 of them are public. Most are community colleges, where the average net price sits between $480 (College of the Sequoias) and about $19,000 a year after grants. The famous names are here too, but the real California story is that a community-college kitchen is the default route, and the state’s pricing makes that hard to argue with. All figures come from the College Scorecard and IPEDS, retrieved July 2026.

Standout Culinary Programs in California

City College of San Francisco: the restaurant-city training ground

CCSF’s Culinary Arts & Hospitality Studies program runs a five-semester A.S. in Culinary Arts with students cooking daily in a working cafeteria and the full-service restaurant at its Ocean Center, plus noncredit certificates from culinary fundamentals through advanced baking & pastry. At $6,906 average net in one of the world’s great restaurant cities, it’s the value route into a San Francisco kitchen.

Los Angeles Trade-Technical College: one of the oldest cooking schools in the country

LATTC’s School of Culinary Arts, ACF Education Foundation accredited, has trained LA’s line cooks for generations and calls itself, with justification, one of the oldest cooking schools in the nation. The 48-unit A.A. and Certificate of Achievement run through a working foodservice facility with industry-veteran chef instructors, covering meat fabrication through management. Average net: $12,323.

Institute of Culinary Education: Pasadena’s accelerated campus

ICE’s Los Angeles campus packs seven teaching kitchens into 38,000 square feet in Pasadena, running diplomas and associate degrees in Culinary Arts, Pastry & Baking Arts, Health-Centered Culinary Arts, and Restaurant & Culinary Management. It’s a for-profit school, and the federal file reports no net price for it, so get the written cost sheet and weigh it against a $3,000 to $7,000 community-college year before signing.

What Culinary School Costs in California

California community colleges are almost free by national standards. Published in-district tuition clusters near $1,200 to $1,500, and average net prices at culinary-reporting campuses run $480 at Sequoias, $2,407 at San Joaquin Delta, $2,424 at Cerritos, $3,133 at Santa Ana, and $3,864 at Pasadena City College. Even the priciest public options, including Napa Valley, Laney, and San Bernardino Valley, stay under $19,000 net. The for-profit tier starts around $23,000. The math is blunt: in California, private culinary tuition buys speed and branding, not access.

Schools You Might Be Searching For

The Culinary Institute of America’s California campuses, Greystone in St. Helena and Copia in Napa, are real and running, but they report federally under the CIA’s New York registration, so they don’t appear as separate rows above; see our New York guide for the CIA’s numbers. Le Cordon Bleu’s California schools (Pasadena, San Francisco, Sacramento) closed with the chain’s U.S. exit by 2017. The Art Institutes’ California culinary programs closed with the chain in September 2023. The San Francisco Cooking School also no longer reports federal completions data.
